Requirements of Sponsors (Canons 872-874)

Only one sponsor is required. Where two sponsors are involved only one male and one female is to be employed. In keeping with tradition each child shall have a godfather and a godmother.

To be admitted to the role of a sponsor a person must intend to assist the baptized lead a Christian life, be at least sixteen years of age, be a Catholic who has been confirmed, and leads a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.
